What the client wanted

This house had substantial Craftsman Style charm, however it was relatively small and had not received any updating in nearly 40 years.

The client’s goal was two fold:

  1. to up fit the house with all of today’s modern amenities and
  2. to enlarge the house in a tasteful manner befitting with neighborhood

What we delivered

First off it was crucial to be respectful of the Craftsman Style. Great pains was taken to use reclaimed goods, such as five panel wood doors, glass door knobs and mortise locks throughout the house.

The kitchen was the big "must" for updating, however the challenge was to modernize in a manner that would be in keeping with the Craftsman Style. The centerpiece of the kitchen was a state of the art 48" Five Star duel fuel range, flanked by a KitchenAid counter depth fridge, KitchenAid 5 cycle dishwasher and duel temp wine fridge. These appliances, surrounded by Craftsman Style elements such as glazed crackle tile, hickory-stained cabinets with forged pewter hardware, and lantern style pendant lighting - provided a kitchen any chef would love to cook in and a look any Craftsman purists, would appreciate!

While quite large when built in 1924, this 2500 square feet home now felt a bit cramped for today’s lifestyle. The goal was to maintain the bungalow look and charm, while expanding the house by 1800 square feet. To accomplish this we removed the rear roof and inserted a new ridge beam running towards the rear of the property. To avoid a boxy look and to maximize the rear esthetic, we added several faux gables which enhanced the actual gable lines. This along with a small bump-out on one side and a recessed cover porch on the other side, gave the rear elevation varying degrees of depth. Adding texture by topping our matched brick with stained cedar shake, was another technique we used to give this now sizable home, reasonable scale.
